Bowling column for Tuesday, October 13, 2020
By: Bette Addington
–CA STATE REGULATIONS CHANGE
Today Kern County was moved from being in the purple zone to the red zone. Although this does not yet open up bowling centers, it is a step in the right direction. Gyms are opening up. You can now dine inside at restaurants provided social distancing allows you to.
This also means that if we continue to show improvement in the next two weeks, we might get to move to the yellow zone which will allow BOWLING!! So, maybe the beginning of November?!?
League secretaries and presidents, start getting prepared for this and reach out to your league bowlers so they know. Hopefully most will return and hopefully we will be able to remain open once the centers are allowed to open again.
–PATRICIA ALONSO PLACES AT 645 ANCHOR GIRL TRIOS TOURNAMENT, OCT. 10-11, CANYON LANES IN CABAZON
CBT came out in force and participated in John Valentine’s 645 Anchor Girl Trios Tournament last weekend at Canyon Lanes in Cabazon. The Champions were the trios team of CBT’s Ramsey Basurto and his wife, Elysia along with Marshall Thomas Kennebrew. Patricia’s trios team came in second which consisted also of CBT’s Ramsey Basurto, Zarcoff Boutell and Patricia Alonso. Congratulations!!
–STEPHANIE SANDERS PLACES THIRD IN ELITE BOWLERS CLUB WOMEN’S SCRATCH TOURNAMENT
Also at Canyon Lanes in Cabazon (Morongo casino), Stephanie Sanders competed in the Elite Bowling Club Women’s Scratch 6 Gamer on Sat., October 3rd and won $250. She was in the company of some serious women bowlers at this event. First place champion was Stephanie Zavala and second place was Missy Bellinder-Parkin. Great bowling, Stephanie! She credits Motiv’s Jackal Ghost for her win.
Alex Garcia also participated in the Elite Bowlers Club Senior Scratch event that also took place the same day at Canyon Lanes but due to a wrist injury, he barely made it through the 6 Gamer.
–NEWS YOU CAN USE FROM CUSBC
The California USBC Board met on Sept. 29, and have made the following decisions:
–The 2021 Adult State Championships to be held at Forest Lanes in Lake Forest have been cancelled due to the unknow future of the centers reopening and the unknown capacity that the centers can hold once they do reopen.
–The 2021 Pepsi Youth Championships will be District (March) and State Finals (May) only. League level qualifying is removed. Only current California youth that are entered in a 2020-21 USBC certified league can participate. Youth Directors will be emailed a tournament packet by November 1st and hard copy packets by December. If centers are still closed by February 1, this event will unfortunately have to cancel.
–All other CUSBC events will be addressed next year.
–BOWLERO’S CCO COLIE EDISON ON UNDERCOVER BOSS LAST FRIDAY
Don’t know if you got to watch this but it was pretty good letting an upper management person come to a variety of centers on the East coast and apply for various positions Bowlero offers. Don’t know if Colie Edison has ever bowled a league, but she sure got a good dose of the reality of running the day-to-day operations of a bowling center. She got to see the flaws in their system like taking 20 minutes to check in a couple for Open bowling because they had to log in all the information on two different systems at the front desk. Then she got to go behind the lanes at another center and work with the lane mechanic which are a dying breed. He was a guy totally dedicated to caring for those bowling machines and, of course, you wonder if he had to care for those bowling machines with making old parts work or if Bowlero was open to ordering new parts. Of course, that was never addressed. Then she worked in the snack bar and quickly realized she wasn’t a short-order cook. Loved the part where the employee who was training her took her down on the lanes with that employee’s teammates from league and she interacted with league bowlers. She asked them if they liked the new Bowlero remodel and one said it was ok but they had to take out 6 lanes to accommodate arcade games!
AMF Southwest Lanes has undergone a serious upgrade. You will be surprised if you didn’t get a glimpse when we got those three week back in June to return to the center.

–MIKE MAYO ENCOURAGEMENT DRIVE-BY A SUCCESS
Thank you to all the local bowlers who came out last Thurs., Oct. 8th, to participate in a “surprise” Drive-By at Mike Mayo’s residence to offer encouragement as he still is struggling with cancer. Please keep Mike in your thoughts and prayers. Special thanks to Mary Jane Brust and Lisa Isbell for their help.
–BOWL.COM HAS YOUR BOOK AVERAGE LISTED
With the delay in Fall/Winter leagues getting to start, did you know you can look up what your Book Average is on Bowl.com? You can also purchase your 2020-21 sanction card or wait until leagues do start and purchase your card through your first day/night of league bowling.
–TOURNAMENT CLUB CANCELLATIONS CONTINUE
Be sure to check with the tournament director whether an upcoming event is a go or not as it changes from day-to-day, even hour-to-hour! Many of them are trying their darndest to provide events for bowlers to compete in but are up against city, county and state health regulations.
