Bowling column for Tuesday, July 7, 2020

By: Bette Addington

–BACK TO CLOSURES – It only lasted a couple weeks that we got to try to resume to normalcy but that quickly changed last Wednesday when we got the news that bowling centers in CA were among the establishments that had to close up again for the next three weeks. Let’s hope it is just for the next three weeks and not extended beyond that. Several Summer leagues were able to get started as well as a few Winter leagues returned to try and finish. Now it is anyone’s guess when we might be able to bowl again. Here’s hoping these three weeks bring the number of new cases of COVID-19 down and come Thurs., July 23rd we can return to bowling.

–ALONSO WINS CBT AGAIN!

Before the second shutdown, Patricia Alonso, along with Andrew Svoren and Joe Smith, were busy traveling to bowling events (St. George, UT, down south and Vegas) and staying true to her winning ways, Patricia won her third CBT (Competitive Bowling Tournaments) title recently. This win was special as it came down to three pins for the win!! Congratulations, Patricia!

–COVID-19 FORCES CANCELLATION OF AUGUST MILITARY CHAMPIONSHIPS IN VEGAS

The 2020 Military Team Classic slated for Aug. 5-20 at SouthPoint in Las Vegas was recently cancelled. Being this event attracts entrants from around the country, High Roller Inc., decided to cancel this event in enough time for everyone to know. Many teams had already cancelled as well as many individuals which left teams incomplete due to fears of the virus. Then there were many who wanted to wait until the first of August to decide if they would enter. So, it was felt the best thing to do at this point was to cancel the event this year.

On a positive note, the January 2021 Military Bowling Championships tournament is still a go. It is scheduled to take place at SouthPoint in Vegas as well. For a brochure on this event, go to www.high-roller.com/wordpress/home/

–GOLDEN EMPIRE USBC BOARD IS MEETING ONLINE

During this pandemic, your local association has been meeting online to try and stay ahead of local bowling and trying to understand the effects the center closures will have on leagues and league bowlers. Obviously, we were not able to have our 2020 annual tournaments so we are waiting to see what fall will bring.

As of now, it looks like our annual Secretaries Workshop will be held online as well in August. More details on this when we have our next board meeting this month.

–CONGRATULATIONS!

– Hopefully you caught the great article in The Bakersfield Californian that was published on Fri., June 26, in the Sports section “Top area bowlers happy to be back in action” that featured Golden Empire USBC’s Bowlers of the Year At Large Jesse DeLaHerran and Lorri Howell written by Ron Stapp! Getting local bowlers in the paper is a tough task and they represented us well!!

–OUR SINCERE CONDOLENCES

– On this July 4th, we lost GEUSBC Hall of Famer and Past President of BBA, Jim LeDoux. He was 83. Jim and his wife, Bobbie, have both been involved with our association for many years and helped bring State tournaments to Bakersfield. Jim was also a former Baseball player. He and Bobbie just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past May 7th. He will be missed.
