Bowling column for Tuesday, August 4, 2020
By: Bette Addington

–CONTINUED CLOSURES – No change. Same-o, same-o. Let’s hope we can start fall leagues in September.

–ANDREW SVOREN, JOSEPH SMITH & RAMSEY BASURTO’S 300 GAMES AT SAM’S TOWN TRIOS EVENT

All the great bowling recently from tournament travel partner, Patricia Alonso, must have rubbed off as the three traveled to compete once again in the Sam’s Town Open Trios tournament the weekend of July 24-26 in Vegas. This was also the weekend of the PBA Member/Non-Member Doubles at Southpoint so Friday started out early for Andrew as he competed in this event on the first squad. Smith competed as well.

Then came Saturday and off Patricia, Joe and Andrew went to bowl at Sam’s Town bowling all three squads. The third squad of the day, Andrew lit it up contributing a 300 as lead-off man. Craig Dopson bowled a 190 and Joe Smith came oh-so-close ending with a 299 for their team.

Sunday they were back at Sam’s Town for another day of bowling. CBT’s Ramsey Basurto, along with his wife Elysia and CBT’s Kapi Cruz teamed up for the first squad of the day and ended up with a terrific series of 2263 which is currently 1st in the Trios Team standings. Ramsey rolled a 300 game with a scratch 779 series. The 300 was rolled for his final game. Congratulations Ramsey, who is also sitting in 4th place in Singles!

But the third squad came alive on Sunday again for Joe and Andrew as they teamed up with Joe Gilliland from Vegas. Andrew had a 690, Joe G. had a 693 and Joe Smith contributed a 300 game with an 816 series for a team total of 2193 which is currently in 3rd place in the Trios Team!! Joe’s 816 has him in 1st place in the Singles with Patricia Alonso and her 810 sitting currently in 2nd.

Great bowling by all!!

–BAKERSFIELD BOWLERS TRAVEL TO RENO FOR 12th CAL BOWLERS TOUR RENO INVITATIONAL

Even with CA centers closed, there are tournaments out there. July 31-August 2 was the 12th Cal Bowlers Tour Reno Invitational held at the newly-remodeled National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV. Patricia Alonso, along with Andrew Svoren and Joe Smith made the trip to go bowl this event along with GEUSBC President Zack Long and Central Valley Masters’ John Curtis, Chris Gregory and Ian Byers. It looked like everyone had a great time at the event. Andrew Svoren was at it again with on his current 300-a-week pace bowling a 300 at now the National Bowling Stadium!! He bowled his 300 in the Doubles event with Patricia Alonso.

Patricia ended up hitting the jackpot just before leaving to return home by getting a Royal Flush on a Poker machine at the Golden Nugget Casino in Sparks for the amount of $4,350!! When you got it, you’ve got it!!

–FREMONT’S CLOVERLEAF BOWL CLOSES

The Covid-19 pandemic has claimed another CA bowling center. On July 24th, Mike Hillman, owner of Cloverleaf Bowl, posted a heartfelt post on Facebook stating he was going to have to close Cloverleaf Bowl. So sad considering he had been fighting to save the center after the land on which the center sits was sold to developers who intended to construct high-end condominiums. The community and bowlers rose to the occasion and tried to keep the center but the developers were not interested. But there was still a glimpse of hope that the center still had time and hoped to reopen. They had even pushed back their 22nd annual Hillman Memorial Scholarship event, originally scheduled in late May to Aug. 8-9. A serious piece of CA bowling history, gone.

–TOURNAMENT CLUB CANCELLATIONS CONTINUE

Be sure to check with the tournament director whether an upcoming event is a go or not as it changes from day-to-day, even hour-to-hour! Many of them are trying their darndest to provide events for bowlers to compete in but are up against city, county and state health regulations.
